Treetops No. 1 and 2

Treetops No. 1 and 2, acrylic cardinal landscape painting by duluth artist aaron kloss

Treetops No. 1 and 2, acrylic cardinal landscape painting by duluth artist aaron kloss
Today's paintings feature a male and female cardinal, titled 'Treetops No. 1 and 2' respectively. They measure 6x6" on canvas, and I painted them on deep profile canvas so that they can be displayed on a wall or stand alone on a shelf. I often think of pairing paintings as bookends, perhaps to start and finish the story of a work of art as it progresses from the thought of the artist, through their hands to completion of the canvas (or whatever art form they are expressing themselves in). These little sweethearts are recently displayed for sale at my gallery, Lakeside Gallery, in Duluth, MN.

Golden Dee Series

Golden Chickadee Numbers 1-3

Golden Chickadee Numbers 1-3
Today's paintings are titled Golden Dee Numbers 1-3 respectively, and measure 6x6" each. These acrylics on canvas have for a subject the chickadee, perched on a golden birch branch with a rich cobalt sky behind them. I paint a lot of birds, and always enjoy the expressions the birds often take. Usually this is by accident, but just a slight angle of the brushstroke can determine if a bird happy, sad, angry, or curious. I'll let you decide what you think these birds are feeling, and if you're feeling like collecting these, they were recently delivered to Lizzards Gallery in Duluth, MN

Cardinals in Gold

cardinals in gold painting by duluth artist aaron kloss, painting of cardinals, triptych, pointillism, duluth painter, duluth art
Cardinals in Gold is the title of this new 12"w x 4"h triptych recently delivered to Siiviis Gallery in Duluth. It's fun to hear there's still a demand for paintings like this after creating so many over the past several years. They're versatile in display options with wall and shelf options, and the three panel format is also unique ... but you know the real reason people enjoy them ... it's the cardinals. Who doesn't love cardinals? Especially when they're perched on golden branches.

Shazam!

Shazam acrylic landscape painting by artist aaron kloss, pointillism, gold birch, autumn birch, mn landscape
"Shazam!"
Today's post, titled Shazam!, is a playful birch landscape featuring vibrant golds and an autumn lake in northern Minnesota, two things that go together just like peanut butter and chocolate. Or pickles and ice cream if you happen to be pregnant. Don't know where that last comment came from, anyways ... I've enjoyed working in the theme of reflections this past year or so, and there just seems to be no end to the interest I have in water reflections. The color and distortion of the reflection make for some creative compositions, and I'm convinced this reflection idea is what caused Monet to stay on the same theme late in his painting career. Hopefully my painting career will continue late in life as well, but if now, at least I've painted an awesome landscape titled Shazam! ... and mentioned pickles and ice cream ... and that's got to be worth something. Have a great labor day weekend. -A.Kloss

Sing a Song (Numbers 1 & 2)

Sing A Song Numbers 1 & 2 painting by artist aaron kloss, pointillism, sivertson gallery, painting of a cardinal

Sing A Song Numbers 1 & 2 painting by artist aaron kloss
These colorful cardinal paintings are titled Sing A Song Numbers 1 & 2, and are 8x8" new acrylics on canvas. Just when I think I've painted my last cardinal a collector or gallery asks for one, and the stories told about this colorful little bird are always amazing. People really connect with the cardinal ... the bright red color, the song they sing, their antics in the trees ... I've painted them for years but only recently do I have a pair that nested by my house. Perhaps that pair of cardinals wanted to tell me to keep painting them, I don't know, but I've enjoyed them as a subject matter, and it seems like a lot of other folks do too. Thanks to everyone who owns one of my cardinal paintings. These cardinals were delivered to Sivertson Gallery in Grand Marais, MN recently.

Spring Cardinals in the Wood

Spring cardinals in the wood painting by artist aaron kloss, painting of cardinals in birch trees in spring pointillism

This piece is titled Spring Cardinals in the Wood and was recently brought in to Lizzards Gallery in downtown Duluth, MN. I've recently enjoyed listening to all the birds around my house, the finches and robins being the most prominent, but I have yet to see the cardinals or hear their song. I'm starting to think the finches have something to do with this, as I have several dozen small brown finches emptying my thistle feeders and making a lot of noise and a big mess, but they are fun to watch with their chatter and jostling for the best perch at the feeder. The cardinals in today's painting are a bit more relaxed, no doubt talking about how the Minnesota Twins aren't doing so well this year haha. TGIF!

Red Dragonfly

Red dragonfly painting by artist aaron kloss, painting of a dragonfly, artist paints dragonflies, insect painting, paintings of bugs, pointillism
Red Dragonfly
Red Dragonfly is the title of this new 10"w x 10"h piece which is one of a series of three dragonfly paintings. I've emphasized color and design with these pieces ... using a strong central image and adding interest with the unique shapes found in dragonfly wings. What a joy these were to paint, I'll post the last in the series tomorrow, and these paintings were recently brought in to Siiviis Gallery here in Duluth.

Cranberry Forest Triptych

Cranberry Forest Triptych painting by artist aaron kloss, triptycn, pointillism, painting of birch trees in fall with red, duluth artist, z place gallery art
Cranberry Forest Triptych
Today's painting is titled Cranberry Forest Triptych and measures a total of 24"w x 10"h. This new piece is available at Z Place Gallery in Ironwood, MI and is part of a group of colorful new landscapes recently added to the gallery. The reds and blues are a playful complement to eachother, setting off the crisp birch trees while drawing the eye laterally across the three canvases. I had painted a similar piece several years ago and was happy to revisit the theme once again. A busy week awaits me as I finish off a couple of commissions for new clients and begin the process of setting up a new gallery space in Duluth .. so exciting! More news on that soon ... all my best, Aaron

Can You See The Cardinals?

can you see the cardinals painting by artist aaron kloss, cardinals painting, red maples painting, sivertson gallery, pointillism
"Can You See The Cardinals?" 8x10, acrylic on canvas
Some noisy and extremely messy finches inspired this piece. You see, I've had a good 40 finches raiding my thistle feeder lately, to the point where I went and bought a big old bag of thistle, and an extra couple feeders to keep up with the finch feast, and to enjoy watching the birds chasing each other off the 20 plus perches. Just as soon as they arrived, they left ... migrating to their nesting grounds no doubt, and there's no way I could have afforded to feed them. But one thing I noticed is that the finches could sit in the brush and be hard to find .. even 40 of them. The way birds can blend into their surroundings always fascinates me ... and so I was inspired to paint some cardinals on red maples. Sometimes I imagine what it would be like to look out my window at fall colors year round, but I can always paint the colors of the season ... and in this case, crimson red is splashed across the canvas and the cardinals dare you to find them ... but they would probably give themselves away with their chirping. :) This piece is being delivered to Sivertson Gallery later this week.

Baltimore Orioles

Baltimore orioles painting by artist aaron kloss, painting of birds, birch tree painting, pointillism
"Baltimore Orioles"  24"w x 12"h
Wow, it's been a busy spring and I've realized I haven't been posting as much as I'd like to! This piece is titled 'Baltimore Orioles' and is 24"w x 12"h, recently brought in to Lizzards Gallery in Duluth, MN. Bright orange birds on crisp white birch with a rich windsor blue sky to complement the orange orioles really make this piece pop.

Spring Rainstorm

Spring Rainstorm acrylic painting by artist aaron kloss, spring birch painting, reflection, pointillism, painting of a minnesota lake
"Spring Rainstorm"  40"w x 30"h
Spring Rainstorm is the title of this new 40x30" acrylic on canvas recently brought in to Lizzards Gallery in Duluth. We've had quite a bit of rainfall this early spring, normally we are shoveling out from the season's last snowfall this time of year, but the winter has been mild. While the landscape isn't greening out just yet as depicted in this spring forest, I'm longing for a good rainstorm, complete with some distant thunder. This piece continues my theme of water reflections and features green birches, rocks, and blues and more blues. Blue and green, the colors of spring, the colors of new life, the colors of my palette lately. :)

Spring Song No. 3

Spring song no. 3 painting by artist aaron kloss, painting of a robin in spring sitting on a next, pointillism, contemporary landscape painting
"Spring Song No. 3"
Today's post is titled Spring Song No. 3, 5"w  7"h, and features a robin in her nest patiently waiting for the arrival of more robins. :) With the statewide snow we had here in Minnesota yesterday, the robins may have to wait for the green leaves a little while longer, but other birds have sure been active around my home lately. Finches and chickadees are fun to watch at the feeders, and the downy woodpecker that has taken residence in my porch column is busy banging away at any wooden object within striking distance. That's why I feed the birds, the activity, the songs, the life, birds have a way of brightening your day. Until you see a robin gobble down a nice juicy worm ... then you may feel a bit .. nauseous. ;)

Spring Morning

spring morning painting by artist painter aaron kloss duluth mn, painting of birch trees forest in spring, minnesota in spring, acrylic landscape, pointillism, aaron kloss art
"Spring Morning"
Today's piece is titled Spring Morning, acrylic on 8"w x 10"h canvas, and features a spring forest with green foliage, birches, and rocks. The birches cast shadows from the rich blue spring sky which backlights the distant green ridge. I've been working in a spring series lately, and using a lot of green and blue paint, but I'm not complaining as the bright color really brightens up the studio, just like a landscape on a beautiful spring morning.

Today's post is playful take on a familiar phrase ... these new spring cardinal paintings are titled Ladies & Gentlemen, and there is a total of six originals in this series measuring 4"w x 4"h. I just love the color of these cardinals, so vibrant and full of life ... normally I have a tough time photographing my work and getting color just the way I like it, but these turned out great. Back to the studio now ... many canvases in progress to finish this week. If you're interested in these, please contact Your Art's Desire Gallery in Minnetonka, MN to check on availability. Cardinals in Spring

Cardinals in Spring painting by artist painter aaron kloss, cardinal nest painting, spring song bird painting, pointillism, duluth mn art, duluth mn painter
"Cardinals in Spring'
This piece, titled Cardinals in Spring, is acrylic on 12"w x 6"h canvas and continues my series of bird nests in spring. We went for a nice walk this afternoon on the Superior Hiking Trail which runs through Duluth and up the north shore. The stretch of trail we hiked ran along the hillside overlooking Duluth and through to Enger Tower. Really cool that we can hike around our town with incredible vistas through woods and still be in the city. Duluth has always had that rugged outdoor woods vibe mixed with housing, industry and retail. And cardinals and spring nests.

This piece is part of my ongoing art show titled Landscapes at Amity Coffee, located at
4429 E Superior St, Duluth, MN 55804.

Sparkling Spring Forest

Sparkling Spring Forest painting by artist aaron kloss, acrylic birch tree painting, north shore painting, spring painting, pointillism, duluth painter, duluth artist, amity coffee
"Sparkling Spring Forest"
Today's piece is titled Sparkling Spring Forest, and is acrylic on 8"w x 10"h canvas. While this painting features a vibrant spring birch forest, the likes of which you'll find all around Duluth, MN, this painting also tells another story. My son decided to make some homemade gift cards. He chose to use vibrant color as well, but he also chose to use glitter. And he chose to make his gift cards in my studio. And I think you know where this is heading .... he was very expressive you could say with his glitter project, and I've been cleaning and sweeping up glitter ever since. So if my work sparkles, hopefully it's the paint and not the glitter. :)

Silent Spring

Silent Spring painting by artist aaron kloss, spring painting, duluth mn artist, pointillism, amity coffee art, northern minnesota painting of birch trees in spring woods landscape
"Silent Spring"
Today's painting begins a series of spring landscapes. This piece is titled 'Silent Spring' and measures 8"w x 10"h, acrylic on canvas. This painting has an interesting background of blues, teals, and purples that offset the lush green birches, foreground and distant ridge. Spring is a season that sneaks up on you, you never really know when it officially arrives, but the greening up of the landscape is a good indicator that spring has arrived ... silently.

This piece is part of my ongoing art show titled Landscapes at Amity Coffee, located at
4429 E Superior St, Duluth, MN 55804.
