There has been a lull of sorts in my blog posts as of late. This is not by choice, but life happens and so I need to roll with the punches. I'm a very introspective type of person who doesn't like to share too much, but I thought I'd share a little today on the significance of this painting. I was diagnosed with MS about 10 years ago, and while I've managed to stay healthy, every once and a while it gets the best of me and knocks me off my horse for a while. Recently I had an attack, first one in seven years, and I didn't want to create or produce any artwork for several weeks. It's kinda strange, really .. someone who has always been an artist not wanting to make art .. but I pulled through and I'm still going. I picked up my brushes once again and painted what I would say is one of the most ambitious works I've ever created. Using a small brush and many layers I created a large scale vibrant painting which I titled Don't Stop Believin'. The title says it all ...

Misty Morning Birches

The fascination with the birch tree continues. The crisp white bark with it's distinctive black markings compel me to capture on canvas what I view. I just love a birch forest with fall color ... the way the color plays with the eye when contrasted with the birch bark ... just love it. On the easel now is a 48"x36" birch forest ... the canvas is calling, gotta go. :)

Fireside Birches

Here's a new work available at Sivertson Gallery in Grand Marais, MN titled Fireside Birches. I started this one during a presentation in February at the gallery, and I originally wanted this one to be just a simple blue sky background that would contrast nicely with the birch trees. But as I worked on it, I just felt the warm colors of autumn tugging at me and just had to answer the call. I finished this one during a stretch of cold weather so it's only natural to be thinking about warm colors. :) Speaking of warm, the weather is finally turning here in Duluth, MN .. old man winter is packing his bags .. bring on spring!

Vertical Birch Blues

I thought a 'snowscape' (as I like to call them) would be appropriate for today. The snow is falling in buckets in Duluth, MN today. I just shoveled 4" and I bet I'll be doing the same thing again later today. The snow sure is pretty, covering the forest like a soft white blanket. Rabbit and deer tracks are visible and the depth of blue color in the twilight is just amazing. Yesterday, a small coyote ran across the street ... at first I thought it was a fox or wolf, but now I'm thinking it was a coyote. He probably had spring fever lol. I know I do. It's off to the studio now, several horizontal birch forests are in the works, to be posted next week. Cheers. -A

Birch Forest Blues

This night painting has a very calming effect on me. Life has been a little too fast and the cobalt blue skies and deep foreground shadows make me want to pause and take it all in. This piece is featured on my Daily Paintworks page ... which is an online artist community. I don't frequently post there, I just enjoy the fellowship and will add work every so often so they can get a feel for my style. That's all for now, happy Friday!!

Birch Tree Shadows

While on a trip up the North Shore to Grand Marais last week, I had the opportunity to stare out the window as I rode as opposed to watching the road while driving. The trip reminded me of childhood memories of watching the world go by while riding in a vehicle and how much I've missed that over the years as I'm often the one driving. I was fascinated by the landscape and shoreline filled with birch trees and forest floor covered by recent snowfall. There was some warm groundcover visible through the snow .. gold colored rushes and grasses along with deep crimson undergrowth. The late afternoon sun cast long blue shadows through the trees and the lake was a deep ultramarine blue. I didn't take any photos as I often like to do ... but the images are captured and filed in my mind and heart and will no doubt influence my work in the coming weeks. I have several landscape compositions coming soon, along with lots of 'stocking stuffer' 4x4 canvases. :)

Reds Reaching Up and Red & Green Retreat

On a cool first day of October, I thought I'd post a couple pieces that feature the color crimson. Reds Reaching Up has a playful feel to the red and blue background and the golden birches are a happy witness. The crimson ridge in Red & Green Retreat calls attention to the background with it's complementary green capturing the eye. The peaceful feel to this piece inspired me to end the title with the word retreat.
