Duluth Art Institute Annual Membership Show

Every year the Duluth Art Institute offers a show to it's artist members that is exhibited in the Great Hall of the Depot. I've participated for about five years now, and every year I enjoy browsing through the show to view the wide variety of artwork on display. It's fun to see art by kids, people who are just starting out and on up to full time professional artists. My wife took a photo of yours truly standing next to this year's featured work of mine titled To You I Will Always Return (Acrylic on 36"w x 24"h canvas). Also of note are two additional shows at the Duluth Art Institute that I've had the pleasure of viewing already. The shows are Land of Wonder by Shawna Gilmore, and Public Domain: Photographs by Ken Bloom. Shawna's work is full of color, life and whimsy, and her work can be viewed online at her website. Ken's photographs are a collection of black and white prints from the 70's in Asia. Very cool. Speaking of cool, the thermostat was 20 below zero this morning in Duluth, so make sure to bring warm clothes. :) Have a great weekend.

"The Most Colorful Time of the Year"

Today's painting, titled The Most Colorful Time of the Year, is part of show recently hung at Fire Roast Café which is on display now through October 31, 2015. This show is a fun collection of new paintings, older fall favorites of mine, as well as prints ... all featuring the warm colors of the season. This painting is along a series of works I've been completing lately that feature the colors blue and gold. I love working in themes and this series really emphasizes color and speaks volumes about why I love the landscape in the autumn. I sometimes wish the trees would have fall color year round, but it's only a couple weeks and you need to get out in the woods and enjoy the color while you can. And if you can, please stop in to Fire Roast Café in Minneapolis, MN in the next few weeks for some great coffee ... after all, it's The Most Colorful Time of the Year.

If you happen to be traveling through Duluth this summer, there's a sweet coffee shop in Lakeside on Duluth's east side called Amity Coffee. I've had an ongoing art show there since they opened last October, and I've recently restocked the shop with some colorful originals and prints. Please stop in if you can for some great coffee! Changing Seasons art show at Red Mug in Superior

If you're in the area on Tuesday, March 3, 2015, please feel free to stop by the opening reception of my newest art show titled Changing Seasons. The show will be available for viewing during the month of March 2015 at Red Mug Coffee in Superior, WI. The show features over thirty pieces of art for sale. From originals in many sizes to framed prints and giclees, this show is sure to melt away those spring fevers and fill the space with the vibrant blues, greens, and golds of the season.

Autumn Escapade

Today's painting features more layers. As I've been reflecting on the work in this show, the theme of layers seems to run through all the works. Birch trees in the foreground, followed by blue stones, birches, a red hedge and distant evergreen ridge ... all complemented by the cobalt blue sky. I'm quite fond of this work, to be honest, this show was difficult to finish during a busy time in my life. But as the dust has settled, I find that the works have such a nice depth of color, and the compositions are very interesting. I find something new every time I view the paintings from this show. Another piece from the Prøve Collective Gallery Tiny Art show.

I was remembering fondly my hikes with my family this past fall through Lester Park and Lincoln Park in Duluth, exploring quiet riverbeds filled with fall foliage. I took many photos, which have helped me immensely with the color and composition of recent paintings. All of these tiny paintings have me thinking of expanding on the themes and ideas each painting represents. I'm already placing several leaves together in my mind, envisioning them as they would appear in a larger composition. So many ideas ... so little time ...

Tiny Art Show at the PROVE Gallery, Duluth

Last night my family and I visited the PROVE Collective Gallery in Duluth to view the opening reception of a wonderful show at the gallery titled 'Tiny Art.' The show was amazing, such a diverse collection of art from sculpture to painting to music and more. My work was so compelling at the 4"x4" scale of each canvas. What a wonderful experience, and great turnout for the opening.

Duluth Art Institute Annual Members Show

Last week we attended the opening reception of the Duluth Art Institute's Annual Member Show. Each member was allowed to enter one piece 30"x30" or less in size. I chose to enter 'Twilight Birch Triptych' as it is a nice expression of my current style, and it met the size requirements. The opening was packed to say the least, as we went up to the balcony to view the exhibit at one point as it was almost impossible to move around! I took a photo which shows how many of the pieces are hung, on moveable walls, and it took us about an hour to view everything. The curator mentioned at the opening of the show that there is a 30% increase in artist memberships this year, showing that the art community is doing well and that many people are creating, viewing, enjoying, and purchasing art. A great time was had by all, please stop by the Depot sometime between now and March 18, 2012 to view the exhibit.
