Glensheen Memories

glensheen memories painting by artist aaron kloss, painting of glensheen building, plein aire painting, aaron kloss painting, paint du nord painting
"Glensheen Memories" 8x8" acrylic on canvas
Today's post is titled Glensheen Memories, and is an 8x8" acrylic on canvas. This piece is the last in a three part series from the Plein Aire week last week. This painting is of a small building on the Glensheen grounds, and the building caught my eye with the unique architectural details and blooming hollyhocks on the right. Perhaps this is a front door I'd enjoy arriving home to every day, especially with it's close proximity to the lake. The Plein Aire week was fun, and I'd like to take another shot at painting outside, especially when not pressed for time. And after last's weeks devastating thunderstorms took out power in wide swaths across northern Minnesota, I have some catch up work to do but I'm thankful the power has been restored. Have a great week.  This piece is part of three new works on display at the Duluth Art Institute now through Sept. 9, 2016 in the upper gallery.

Glensheen Garden

glensheen garden painting, aaron kloss glensheen, plein aire aaron kloss, plein air pointillism
"Glensheen Garden"  8"w x 10"h
Today's piece is titled Glensheen Garden, and is 8"w x 10"h. When you're at the Glensheen Mansion, at the back of the house you step out onto this patio that overlooks the expansive gardens and ultimately lake Superior. I was at the corner where you can see the fountain, and thought the fountain and the lake would help combine for a nice composition.  This piece is part of three new works on display at the Duluth Art Institute now through Sept. 9, 2016 in the upper gallery.

"Glensheen Estate" 8"w x 10"h
After a quite lengthly hiatus from blogging, I'm back with a vengeance. Just kidding, I'm back with a nice piece from my plein aire week titled Glensheen Estate, 8"w x 10"h. This piece is part of three new works on display at the Duluth Art Institute now through Sept. 9, 2016 in the upper gallery. While I was quite busy running my new gallery (Lakeside Gallery) during the week, I was able to complete three pieces which I'm quite fond of for the plein aire event. Now that the gallery is all set up, I'll be back to blogging and updating my work on a regular basis. Please stop back soon, and visit my gallery and personal websites for more information on my work. All my best, Aaron

Man's Best Friends (Commission)

Man's Best Friends painting by duluth artist aaron kloss, house painting, painting of a house, custom dog painting
"Man's Best Friends"
Today I'm featuring a post titled Man's Best Friends which is a 24"x24" canvas commissioned by a local resident. In the process of getting relocated due to a job, the person wanted to surprise his wife with a painting of their home that featured their two dogs on the front porch. This made for a fun challenge for me, and also a memorable gift of the home they loved. Sometimes life has unexpected surprises and new adventures, I know my next adventure will be a memorable one, I'll be sharing more on that this next week ... but hopefully I'll take time to play too, those dogs sitting on the front porch look like they're ready to play fetch.
Feel free to contact me in you'd like to talk about a custom painting for your home or business ... and also please visit my website for more examples of my work.
All my best,
-A

Spring Cardinals in the Wood

Spring cardinals in the wood painting by artist aaron kloss, painting of cardinals in birch trees in spring pointillism

This piece is titled Spring Cardinals in the Wood and was recently brought in to Lizzards Gallery in downtown Duluth, MN. I've recently enjoyed listening to all the birds around my house, the finches and robins being the most prominent, but I have yet to see the cardinals or hear their song. I'm starting to think the finches have something to do with this, as I have several dozen small brown finches emptying my thistle feeders and making a lot of noise and a big mess, but they are fun to watch with their chatter and jostling for the best perch at the feeder. The cardinals in today's painting are a bit more relaxed, no doubt talking about how the Minnesota Twins aren't doing so well this year haha. TGIF!

Blue Dragonfly

blue dragonfly painting by artist aaron kloss, painting of insect, painting of a dragonfly, pointillism,

Today's post, titled Blue Dragonfly, is the last of a three part series on 10x10" canvases recently delivered to Siiviis Gallery. I had a great time painting these, and actually they are the my first attempt at painting insects. Perhaps I'll continue with other insects as I find them so interesting with their shapes and colors.... I just don't know if people will collect them, but sometimes art isn't about selling and all that but about the simple act of creating. I need to return to that simple act from time to time when I'm busy with a large commission or preparing for an art show ... to return to that child like joy from my youth I had when drawing and painting ... and dreaming of one day being a full time artist. Sorry, I'm waxing poetic yet again, I'm off to the easel chasing that childhood dream ...

Red Dragonfly

I've emphasized color and design with these pieces ... using a strong central image and adding interest with the unique shapes found in dragonfly wings. This piece is part of a series of three dragonfly paintings recently brought in to Siiviis Gallery in Duluth, MN. It's about that time of year, when the dragonflies start hatching and showing off their vibrant colors and intricate wing patterns. And you know the best part about dragonflies? They eat mosquitos and horseflies! I'll be posting the other two in this series this week. All my best, Aaron

North Shore Spring

North Shore Spring painting by duluth artist aaron kloss, painting of birch trees at a lake in spring, pointillism, spring painting, sivertson gallery painting

Spring can be such a short season here in the Northland, the season hasn't influenced much of my work primarily due to weather. It's spring here now and it's raining with a high of 38 degrees today and high winds. Not exactly the kind of weather that makes you want to go outside and play. But late spring color can be very bright later in the season as the trees leaf out in bright greens before getting their rich green summer coloring. Today's painting, titled North Shore Spring, is 18"w x 18"h and is a reflection of the colors of the season of spring, and this piece was recently delivered to Sivertson Gallery in Grand Marais MN ... stay warm!

Cranberry Forest Triptych

Cranberry Forest Triptych painting by artist aaron kloss, triptycn, pointillism, painting of birch trees in fall with red, duluth artist, z place gallery art
Cranberry Forest Triptych
Today's painting is titled Cranberry Forest Triptych and measures a total of 24"w x 10"h. This new piece is available at Z Place Gallery in Ironwood, MI and is part of a group of colorful new landscapes recently added to the gallery. The reds and blues are a playful complement to eachother, setting off the crisp birch trees while drawing the eye laterally across the three canvases. I had painted a similar piece several years ago and was happy to revisit the theme once again. A busy week awaits me as I finish off a couple of commissions for new clients and begin the process of setting up a new gallery space in Duluth .. so exciting! More news on that soon ... all my best, Aaron

Can You See The Cardinals?

can you see the cardinals painting by artist aaron kloss, cardinals painting, red maples painting, sivertson gallery, pointillism
"Can You See The Cardinals?" 8x10, acrylic on canvas
Some noisy and extremely messy finches inspired this piece. You see, I've had a good 40 finches raiding my thistle feeder lately, to the point where I went and bought a big old bag of thistle, and an extra couple feeders to keep up with the finch feast, and to enjoy watching the birds chasing each other off the 20 plus perches. Just as soon as they arrived, they left ... migrating to their nesting grounds no doubt, and there's no way I could have afforded to feed them. But one thing I noticed is that the finches could sit in the brush and be hard to find .. even 40 of them. The way birds can blend into their surroundings always fascinates me ... and so I was inspired to paint some cardinals on red maples. Sometimes I imagine what it would be like to look out my window at fall colors year round, but I can always paint the colors of the season ... and in this case, crimson red is splashed across the canvas and the cardinals dare you to find them ... but they would probably give themselves away with their chirping. :) This piece is being delivered to Sivertson Gallery later this week.

Baltimore Orioles

Baltimore orioles painting by artist aaron kloss, painting of birds, birch tree painting, pointillism
"Baltimore Orioles"  24"w x 12"h
Wow, it's been a busy spring and I've realized I haven't been posting as much as I'd like to! This piece is titled 'Baltimore Orioles' and is 24"w x 12"h, recently brought in to Lizzards Gallery in Duluth, MN. Bright orange birds on crisp white birch with a rich windsor blue sky to complement the orange orioles really make this piece pop.
