Golden Glow on the Lake, and A View To Remember

Today's post is a two for one special. These two pieces were painted for a collector as a gift to family members. These two paintings depict a sunrise and a sunset over lake Superior with the cabin deck in the foreground. While the reference photos had the cabin and deck silhouetted against the bright sky, I added in some color and detail so that the pieces would be brighter, happier, and also work well if displayed together.

Today's piece is titled Spring In Hilltopper Country, and is a new 24x12" acrylic on canvas. This piece is part of the Marshall School annual fundraiser event, and will soon be finding a new home. I've been enjoying the spring weather we've been having lately, which has inspired me to dust off the green paints and brighten up the canvases with new landscapes which will be featured here soon. Cardinals in Gold

This vibrant original acrylic on canvas features three red cardinals perched on golden birches, set against a bright blue autumn sky. Cardinals in the Trees

Today's piece is titled Cardinals in the Trees, and is a new acrylic on 12x12" canvas. This painting features three female cardinals set amongst red maples somewhere in northern Minnesota. Working in this brown and red color palette is a nice lesson in camouflage. These birds may be beautiful but they are difficult to see with their muted feathers. Good for them, the vibrant male cardinals will have to work harder to find them. This piece was featured recently on my dailypaintworks site, and may be purchased there if still available. A Cardinal Conversation

Featured today is a fun new 12x12" acrylic on canvas titled A Cardinal Conversation. Five female and male cardinals are perched amongst red maples against a bright blue sky. Inspired Life+Art

One For The Road

One For The Road

Today's piece is titled One For The Road, and measures 6"x6", acrylic on canvas. This painting features a red squirrel perched atop a golden birch branch. The squirrel is holding an acorn and thinking to himself ' I think I'll take just one more for the road'...but we all know he's going to bury it someplace safe, never to be found again. It was fun to paint a new subject, and the red squirrel may be a feisty little fella, but the copper brown coloring of their fur is indeed pleasant. Snowshoe Trek - new acrylic on canvas

Snowshoe Trek

Today's piece is a winter landscape titled Snowshoe Trek. This piece is 12x12", acrylic on canvas, and was recently delivered to Sivertson Gallery in Grand Marais, MN. I love the rich blues of the winter landscape, the late afternoon and evening shadows on the snow are captivating, and the inspiration for this piece and several others like it. The moon in this painting is a bright complementary gold and lights up the sky. We could use some more snow here in Duluth, MN soon, we've had warmer temps and the landscape has patches of grass visible, with lots of ice from melting and freezing ... nothing a few inches of fresh powder wouldn't fix ... and then it would be time to lace up the snowshoes.

Sublime Pine

Today's piece is titled Sublime Pine is part of a series of three 4x12" originals on canvas featuring pine trees. These pine pieces are very colorful and expressive, I've enjoyed painting the pines recently and will no doubt continue in them. I Was Here First

Today's painting is a fun picture of life in the trees. A bright red cardinal is perched on a golden birch, minding his own business, when a red squirrel appears out of nowhere and wants to use the same branch. The cardinal says 'I was here first!' as the squirrel retreats, knowing better than to mess with the bright beaky winged fellow. I enjoy the playfulness of this piece, and the bright color, something I miss this time of year as it's raining in January and the skies and landscape are grey. Spring will be here soon enough and provide ample inspiration to paint once again. This painting is part of a new group of small works at Siiviis Gallery in Duluth, MN.

Frozen Birch Forest

Today's painting is titled Frozen Birch Forest, 24x36, and is part of a new group of winter landscapes at Sivertson Gallery in Grand Marais, MN. The birch forest was frozen when I painted this night landscape that features the moon in the center, sparkling and shimmering across the sky and snowy foreground. We are currently enjoying a January thaw, but no doubt we'll have a couple more arctic blasts before the end of winter. But for now, I'm enjoying the blue shadows of winter, while eagerly yearning for Spring.

Autumn at the Depot

"Autumn at the Depot" 36x24

It's a new year and along with changing the calendar I have some new paintings ready to go, and endless ideas to explore this coming year. I thought I'd start this year off with a special piece, this painting is titled Autumn at the Depot, and is 36x24, acrylic on canvas. This piece is my contribution to the Duluth Art Institute's annual membership exhibition. The show is always a fun assortment of emerging artists and grumpy old professional artists like myself .. and everyone inbetween. If you're in the Duluth area anytime between Jan. 26 and Feb. 24 2017, please stop by the Depot to view this piece and many more interesting pieces from the other members. I had fun painting this one, reminiscing on my many trips to the Depot with my children when they were younger to see the trains and play at the children's museum. I used my imagination on this one as well, painting the depot in Autumn while using a winter reference photo I had taken, and also using a night setting which allowed the golds of the foliage and the light cream color of the building to pop against the night sky. The roof is a greenish grayish color, and I also didn't want to try to pair that color against a light blue or gray sky. Otherwise, I slaved away on this piece as the roofline and window details kept me making constant adjustments, but I didn't mind as I wanted this to be a memorable piece, which it is. Here's to a wonderful 2017 filled with life, laughter, color, and joy ... and many more memorable trips to the Depot.
